Meet Ellie
The Ear Pierced Elephant
Ellie is Our side kick that comes with us to all ear piercing consultations. She allows us to demonstrate the ear piercing procedure and aftercare with your child by a hands on approach. Children learn by play, and Ellie is a perfect tool to help your child understand the ear piercing procedure and eliminate fear from the piercing experience.
What you can expect during your Ear piercing appointment
Initial meet and greet where we choose the perfect location to set up for the ear lobe piercing procedure. During this time, we get to learn more about your princess and discuss the ear piercing process.
Earring selection- we provide multiple earring options from surgical grade stainless steel to 14K gold. to learn more about earring options, click here.
We then discuss the different types of ear piercing we offer and review the ear piercing process via each method. We offer both hollow needle earlobe piercing via 18 gauge pre-sterilized single use needle and earlobe piercing via a hand held pressure device. The risks and benefits of each procedure are reviewed in detail and the ear piercing procedure is determined by parent/legal guardian.
Ear lobe piercing via needle causes less tissue trauma and leads to faster healing times. We also can be the most precise with needle piercing.
Our hand held pressure device contains a no touch single stud and clasp system. This option decreases risk of injury to your child while allowing a safe and effective ear piercing option. We never use piercing guns, as they are spring loaded and cause inaccurate placement, more tissue trauma, and more discomfort.
Once the earring is selected, consents and medical/surgical history are reviewed (if pertaining to ear piercing procedure)
Antiseptic solution is used to clean the ear and topical numbing cream (lidocaine) is applied to site of the ear piercing .
Ear is marked and parent/ child confirm suitable placement.
After piercings have been completed, after care instructions are reviewed in detail and written instructions are provided to the child and parent.
**we provide all supplies required for ear piercing appointments

FAQs
-
We offer two options for in home ear lobe piercing
1- 18 gauge hollow point pre-sterilized single use needle. Our recommendation is to pierce via 18 g hollow point needle.
However, in some instances, ear piercing with a needle may be contraindicated and/or our second option may be better suited for your child.
2- With a specialized hand held pressure device. This device allows us to provide accurate and precise earring placement while keeping your child safe from injury. Best of all, it’s less painful than a gun and heals beautifully.

I get this question a lot! Knowing ear piercing comes with some pain is very anxiety producing for any child. My goal is to be able to decrease some of that anxiety and help your child as much as possible feel comfortable with the piercing process. Ultimately, there are some children who may just not be ready- if that’s the case- NO pressure! I do charge my ear piercing fee for my time but in the future, when you child is ready, I will waive the piercing fee.
-
There are many pros and cons of ear piercings at different ages, but professionally, most school aged children are ready for the management and care of ear piercings.
-

Daily Cleaning
Always WASH your/child's hands before touching earrings and piercing. This is the number one step to preventing infection
Clean your child's ears morning and night with a sterile saline wound wash/solution.
These products can typically be found in the wound care aisle of any drug store/Target/Walmart. Recommend that you either directly spray the front and the back of the earring, or can apply solution to a Q tip or gauze to clean the earring and piercing.
Pat dry with towel
optional: can apply thin layer of petroleum jelly via clean Qtip to piercing once a day. Wet wounds tend to heal faster
Continue cleaning routine for 6 weeks
After 6 weeks, most piercings are completely healed and ready for changing if your child desires. Recommend to keep a piercing in ear at all times for at least one year. Piercings can close quickly.
Things to Avoid
Avoid cleaning ear piercing with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh products or fragrance heavy soaps. Be cautious of the use of products including shampoos, conditioners and lotions on fresh piercings. (recommend to clean ears after shower/bath)
Swimming for the first 24 hours. Afterwards, okay to swim just recommend cleansing ears after swimming
twisting or playing with earrings. Hand hygiene is important at preventing the spread of infection.
What to Expect
it is normal to experience some discomfort and swelling at the site of the ear piercing in the first 48 hours after initial piercing.
Your ear piercing may ooze a straw yellow colored liquid and form a crust- this is part of the normal healing process. You may clean the crust away during the twice daily cleanings.
Some itching in the weeks following the piercing can be common. This is part of the body's natural healing process.
Things to Look Out For
thick yellow or green pus associated with increasing tenderness and redness at the site of the ear piercing is typically a sign of infection. Continue cleaning regimen and reach out to myself or pediatrician.
inspect earring front and back often. If unable to see front or back or concerned earring has become embedded in child's ear, reach out to myself or pediatrician.
